Some weekends the fixture list looks like it’s trying to help you. This is not one of those weekends, there is the world’s longest domestic fixture though, and my biggest bet of the year. I’ve spent the last 48 hours bouncing between La Liga, the A‑League and the Bundesliga like a man who’s lost his passport in an airport and is too embarrassed to ask for help.
But that’s the beauty of it. Chaos is where the value hides. One minute you’re watching Celta Vigo defend like they’re allergic to the ball, the next you’re knee‑deep in an Auckland FC press conference wondering why you suddenly care so much about Perth Glory’s travel schedule.
Four games, three leagues, four completely different types of pain. Exactly the kind of weekend that separates the punters from the passengers.
Let’s get to the picks.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid
La Liga, Balaidos, Vigo, Spain, 9pm CET, Friday 6th March
Prices: 3.10 Celta Vigo, 3.45 Draw, 2.34 Real Madrid
The La Liga title race has been flipped on its head in the space of a fortnight. Barcelona suddenly have daylight, four points of it, and Real Madrid now find themselves in the unfamiliar position of chasing rather than dictating. That alone makes this Friday night trip to Celta Vigo feel enormous.
It’s awkward, it’s away, and it’s exactly the kind of fixture Madrid have made a mess of in the past. But sometimes you don’t overthink it. They simply have to win. Full stop. If they want to keep the pressure on, this is the moment, and the price is just too tempting for me to ignore.
There’s no grand tactical breakdown here, no deep dive into Vigo’s press or Madrid’s rotations. It’s a straight‑up faith bet in a team that can’t afford to blink. I’m taking Los Blancos and letting the weekend start with a swing.
Tip: Real Madrid to win @ 2.34. 1 unit.
Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers
A-League, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle, Australia, 7am CET, Saturday 7th March
Prices: 2.16 Newcastle Jets, 3.95 Draw, 2.90 Western Sydney Wanderers
The early evening kick-off Down Under is an absolute cracker. Newcastle sit top of the A‑League table and look every bit like a side enjoying the view. Western Sydney, meanwhile, are trying to convince everyone their 4–0 win over Macarthur wasn’t a one‑off burst of competence after a month of misery.
The Jets won the reverse fixture 2–1 just six weeks ago, and they’ve turned McDonald Jones Stadium into something close to a fortress this calendar year. Three home games, three wins, nine goals scored, two conceded. It’s not complicated: they’re flying, they’re confident, and they’re at home.
The Wanderers have little left to play for beyond pride, and pride doesn’t travel particularly well in this league. I’m sticking with the league leaders to get it done again.
Tip: Newcastle Jets to win @ 2.16. 1 unit.
FC Cologne v Borussia Dortmund
Bundesliga, RheinEnergieStadion, Cologne, Germany, 6.30pm CET, Saturday 7th March
Prices: FC Cologne, 4.10 Draw, 1.79 Borussia Dortmund
Some games don’t need a deep dive, and this is one of them. In Germany it’s Bayern, then Dortmund, then everyone else trying to keep up, and Dortmund are a long way ahead of “the rest”. They were edged out by Bayern last week (a result this column called correctly) and they’ve had seven long days to stew on it.
Cologne are the unfortunate recipients of that mood. They haven’t won in four, they look short on ideas, and they’re running into a Dortmund side who will be desperate to reassert the pecking order after last weekend’s frustration. When Dortmund drop points, they usually respond with a statement, and this feels like the perfect spot for exactly that.
Simple, really. Dortmund will have too much.
Tip: Borussia Dortmund to win @ 1.79. 1 unit.
Auckland FC v Perth Glory
A-League, Go Media Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand, 3am CET, Sunday 8th March
Prices: 1.45 Auckland FC, 4.60 Draw, 6.40 Perth Glory
Here it is, as promised, the world’s longest domestic fixture and a hail mary punt. Auckland were very friendly to this column last weekend, and I’m not pretending otherwise, I’m going straight back in, and this is the biggest bet I’ve placed since this column began.
The reasoning is brutally simple. This is the longest domestic trip in world football. Five‑thousand‑three‑hundred‑and‑thirty‑six kilometres. A seven‑hour flight. And, just to make it even more ridiculous, a 3pm kick‑off in New Zealand which is 10am in Perth. The Glory players’ bodies won’t know what’s happening. If there is a fixture anywhere on the planet where the away side can genuinely be jet‑lagged, it’s this one.
And that’s before you even get to the football. Auckland are flying. They’re supreme at home. They just thumped Melbourne City, a far better side than Perth, and they look like a team who’ve figured out exactly who they are. Perth, by contrast, are walking into a buzzsaw after a cross‑continental sleep cycle disaster.
This is a three‑unit firework. I’ll be setting my alarm for it.
Tip: Auckland FC to win @ 1.45. 3 units.
