My FPL Gameweek 7 Squad Plans: Back to the Drawing Board with City Set to Dominate

Last week was a hammer blow to my hopes for the season as my Free Hit chip play went awry and I’m now desperately seeking some inspiration as I look to turn the tide. Manchester City look a good team to start with this in FPL Gameweek 7, after their impressive win over Liverpool on Sunday they return to the Etihad for a game against newly promoted Ipswich. The Tractor Boys have made a solid start to the campaign, but they shipped five goals on their last trip to Manchester in August and the City players look determined to keep the ship sailing in the right direction.

Arsenal also had a good win in the Champions League on Tuesday and are just three points behind City. They travel to Nottingham Forest this weekend with their hosts having won just one of their opening six league matches. The Champions will fancy their chances.

Other than that it looks a tricky game week. With the rest of the ‘Big Six’ out of sorts, it’s difficult to know who to trust. Brighton are in good form and host Palace, so it’s the league’s top three that look the ones to side with this weekend in FPL.

Current Global Rank

Goalkeepers

Tough call between Antonin Kinsky and Bart Verbruggen this week, but I’m siding with the Brighton keeper after his clean sheet against Sunderland last week. The Seagulls have been excellent so far, while Tottenham are yet to win and face a Coventry side who’ve won two on the trot and look to be finding their feet back at the top level. They could cause Spurs some problems this weekend.

Defence

Marc Guehi comes back into the side as the first of three City players in the team. They have strong clean sheet prospects at home to Ipswich. and he’s joined by Jan Paul Van Hecke and Ricardo Calafiori in a three man backline. Van Hecke has been racking up a few points for Spurs and has a sniff of clean sheet points at home to Coventry, and Calafiori found the net for Arsenal last week and has strong potential away at Forest, so this looks a simple play for this gameweek.

On the bench are Bobby Thomas who’s Coventry side are away to Spurs, and Luke Shaw, who is an injury doubt for Manchester United’s trip to Leeds, which looks a tricky task.

Midfield

My first transfer of the week is to bring in Morgan Rogers who can no longer be ignored. Chelsea head to unbeaten Everton in good spirits after their 5-1 home win against Bournemouth, and Rogers has hit the ground running following his big money move to West London. Bruno Fernandes is the player on the scrapheap after his disappointing start to the season.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is in the side after his big haul at Hull last week. It should be an entertaining game between his Toffees side and Chelsea, and attacking returns are a chance for the English midfielder as he looks to punish his former club.

The second Manchester City player in the side is in-form Rayan Cherki, a no-brainer after his goals have helped propel his team to a perfect start to the campaign. He’s a candidate for the captaincy if it weren’t for the small possibility of Maresca rotating things for this one.

Diego Gomez of Brighton is the next man in, he’s had a cracking start to FPL this season and a home game against Palace is a good opportunity for the Paraguayan to add his tally.

Dominik Szoboszlai would have been in line for a transfer, but budget didn’t allow, however, he’s close to the chop for next weekend if he doesn’t pick up a return at Brentford. The Hungarian is a doubt so drops to the bench this week.

Forwards

Thiago comes in for his Brentford teammate Kaye Furo as I pivot to a three man attack. The Bees embark on a decent run of fixtures at Liverpool at home presents a chance for them to add to Andoni Iraola’s woes.

Erling Haaland obviously keeps his place, as does Joao Pedro, the two best forwards in the game and nailed starters for almost every team.

FPL Captaincy

The captaincy goes back to Erling Haaland this week. He’d have been a better choice than Bukayo Saka last week, and his home game with Ipswich looks primed for him to haul big. Rayan Cherki has the vice captaincy after he found the net at Anfield.

FPL Gameweek 7 team lineup

FPL Watch List

Ezri Konsa – I have space for two Arsenal assets, and with budget now in place, Konsa has been earmarked for signature in gameweek 8.

Pascal Gros – Brighton have Liverpool and Manchester City on the horizon, but after that, the German is coming straight into the side.

Kevin Schade – The Brentford forward is listed as a midfielder and has been superb this campaign, he’s a doubt this week, but with Brentford’s run of fixtures, he’s a strong candidate to come in for next weekend for Dominik Szoboszlai.
