Tommy the Punter’s Midweek Moves: Champions League Quarter Final Showdowns set up Beautifully

Tommy the Punter's Champions League Quarter Final tips banner

The weekend was shaping up to be an absolute write‑off, one of those grim, grey slogs where every bet feels like it’s personally mocking you, but then, well… Manchester City in April. What else do you even say. I was on them at 2.17, feeling very pleased with myself, and then they start the game odds‑on which either means this column suddenly has a cult following or I wasn’t the only one who sniffed out the value. Either way, they cruised it, and now my title bet on them is back from the dead and stretching its legs again.

It’s going to be a cracking end to the season, no matter how it shakes out. But before we get lost in the run‑in drama, we’ve got more Champions League chaos to navigate, and I’ve got a couple of sneaky little fancies this week that I genuinely think are worth a play as we quietly build up the World Cup betting pot.

Let’s get into it.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona

Champions League Quarter Final, Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Madrid, Spain, 9.00pm CET, Tuesday 14th April
Prices: 3.82 Atletico Madrid, 4.50 Draw, 1.81 Barcelona

Atletico properly stunned Barcelona in the first leg. Yes, the Cubarsí red card flipped the whole thing on its head, but even before that Barca looked weirdly casual, like they’d turned up expecting a light jog. Then Julián Álvarez bends in that free kick out of nowhere, and Sorloth follows it with a hammer blow that really did chuck the cat among the pigeons. I always spell that wrong but you know what I mean.

Now it goes back to Madrid and the prices just feel off. Barcelona have the badge, the reputation, the attacking toys, all of that, but this is Simeone in his natural habitat. Home crowd snarling, two‑goal cushion, game state tilted perfectly towards the dark arts. He’ll have been grinning to himself all week.

Atleti have scored some absolutely vicious counter‑attacking goals in this competition. The kind where you blink and suddenly Álvarez is celebrating in the corner. And with Griezmann drifting into those clever little pockets and Lookman doing that thing where he looks like he’s about to fall over but somehow beats three players, they’ve got more than enough to hurt Barca again.

I can see Barcelona having loads of the ball, looking “nearly dangerous” without actually being dangerous, and then getting punched on the break. It just feels like that kind of night.

So yeah, at this price, I’m happy backing Atletico Draw No Bet. It’s a big number for a team built for exactly this situation.

Tip: Atletico Madrid Draw No Bet @ 3.00. 1 unit.

Liverpool v PSG

Champions League Quarter Final, Anfield, Liverpool, UK, 9.00pm CET, Tuesday 14th April
Prices: 2.48 Liverpool, 4.02 Draw, 2.51 PSG

Liverpool gave themselves a bit of a shot in the arm by beating Fulham at the weekend, but let’s not kid ourselves, that was the outlier. A nice little confidence boost, sure, but PSG are a completely different animal and they’re walking into Anfield with a two‑goal cushion and a full week of prep in the bank. Meanwhile Liverpool have spent most of this season looking like they’re trying to remember what they used to be good at.

Luis Enrique’s lot will remind everyone of the gap here. As predicted in this column, Désiré Doué and Kvaratskhelia ran absolute rings around Liverpool’s five‑man defence in Paris. It was almost uncomfortable to watch at times. And the thing is, PSG don’t even need to force this second leg. They can sit in, soak up the early Anfield noise, and then hit Liverpool with those tight, pacy little interchanges that feel like they’re happening in fast‑forward.

They did this last year too. Came to Anfield, came to the Emirates, and walked out with wins. And that was against better versions of those teams. This Liverpool side isn’t the 2024/25 monster. They’re a bit brittle, a bit unsure of themselves, and they’ve been coughing up big chances all season.

So seeing PSG as outsiders here is honestly a bit of a shock. Outsiders or not, they’re the better team, they’re in control of the tie, and they’ve got the exact tools to finish the job.

I’m following the value again.

Tip: PSG to win @ 2.51. 1 unit.

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid

Champions League Quarter Final, Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany, 9.00pm CET, Wednesday 15th April
Prices: 1.58 Bayern Munich, 5.36 Draw, 4.54 Real Madrid

Bayern won the first leg 2–1 in what felt like a proper old‑school Champions League punch‑up at the Bernabéu. They backed it up with a 5–0 away win at St Pauli which looks great on paper, but let’s be honest, they were hanging on for dear life in Madrid at times. Manuel Neuer basically turned into a brick wall with gloves. He made two outrageous saves either side of the Luis Díaz and Harry Kane goals, and without him Bayern are probably walking into this second leg needing a miracle.

Kane being rested at the weekend is a bit ominous. He’ll be fresh, he’ll be sharp, and he’ll be doing that thing where he drops into midfield and suddenly Bayern look like they’ve got twelve players. All logic says Bayern finish the job here. They’re at home, they’re scoring goals, they’ve got the momentum, and they’ve got the best goalkeeper of his generation playing like he’s 27 again.

But then there’s the other voice in my head. The one that whispers “it’s Real Madrid in Europe, you idiot”. And I can’t ignore it. I’ve tried. I genuinely sat here for ten minutes telling myself to be sensible, and then I remembered that Madrid are the greatest Champions League team of all time and they only need one moment to flip a tie on its head.

They’ve got more than enough to score first. And if they do, this whole thing becomes a completely different match. Bayern will wobble, the crowd will tighten up, and suddenly Madrid will start doing that weird inevitability thing they do where they look terrible for 70 minutes and then win anyway.

So I’m throwing two darts at this. Real Madrid Draw No Bet, and a little nibble on the draw at a huge price, because if Madrid get that first goal, both bets start looking very tasty.

I don’t see Bayern failing to score, but that’s fine. I’m not betting on a clean sheet. I’m betting on chaos. And Madrid are still the kings of that.

Tip: Real Madrid Draw No Bet @ 3.57. 0.5 units & Draw @ 5.36. 0.5 units.
