Tommy the Punter’s World Cup Wagers – Day 5: Uruguay & Iran set for straightforward tasks and why Belgium may struggle

World Cup Wagers banner

Day 5 of the World Cup rolls in with the subtlety of a freight train, and after a weekend of shocks, late goals, and emotional damage, we’re back in the saddle and ready to go again. Qatar’s last‑gasp equaliser against Switzerland blew the doors off the tournament, Germany hit seven, and the betting gods reminded us — as they always do — that nothing is guaranteed except chaos.

But chaos is where opportunity lives. And Day 5? It’s full of it. Four games, four bets, and one very lopsided Spanish procession to kick things off. Let’s get into it.

Spain v Cape Verde

World Cup Group H, Atlanta Stadium, Atlanta, USA, 6pm CET, Monday 15th June
Prices:
1.06 Spain, 12.00 Draw, 23.00 Cape Verde

Spain couldn’t have asked for a kinder start if they’d written the script themselves. Cape Verde are a brilliant story, small nation, big heart, but this is a gulf in class so wide you could land a plane in it. Luis de la Fuente will likely rest his two star wide forwards, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, because frankly, he can. Even without them, Spain’s XI will still be dripping with players from Barcelona, Manchester City, PSG, Atletico Madrid, and Real Sociedad.

And speaking of Real Sociedad… Mikel Oyarzabal is in the form of his life. But the real value? The little metronome himself: Pedri.

Six goals in 41 caps doesn’t scream “lump on,” but four of those have come in his last eleven. He’s arriving late, he’s drifting into pockets, he’s taking shots he never used to take. And after Germany’s midfielders helped themselves against Curaçao, this is exactly the kind of game where a Spanish midfielder ghosts into the box and taps one home. Spain will dominate the ball, dominate territory, dominate everything. Cape Verde will be chasing shadows for 90 minutes.

Tip: Pedri to score anytime @ 4.12. 0.5 units.

Belgium v Egypt

World Cup Group G, Seattle Stadium, Seattle, USA, 9pm CET, Monday 15th June
Prices: 1.56 Belgium, 4.05 Draw, 6.00 Egypt

This is the sneaky game of the day. Egypt are no mugs. Semi‑finalists at AFCON. Drew 0–0 with Spain in March. Only narrowly beaten by Brazil in their final warm‑up. They’re organised, disciplined, and physically strong, exactly the kind of team Belgium hate playing against.

Belgium, meanwhile, are the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde side. One minute they’re slicing teams apart with De Bruyne and Doku, the next they’re defending like they’ve never met each other. They should win this group, but this is their toughest fixture by a mile.

And then there’s the weather. Seattle is expected to be scorching, and when it’s hot, teams conserve energy. Low tempo. Low risk. Low scoring. This has cagey written all over it.

Tip: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.85. 1 unit.

Saudi Arabia v Uruguay

World Cup Group H, Miami Stadium, Miami, USA, 12pm, Tuesday 16th June
Prices: 7.45 Saudi Arabia, 4.25 Draw, 1.46 Uruguay

Group H is a two‑horse race: Spain and Uruguay. Spain will batter Cape Verde. Uruguay will want to make a statement of their own. And with Marcelo Bielsa in charge, they’ll do it at 100 miles per hour.

The old guard — Suarez, Cavani — are gone. This is the new era. Darwin Núñez leading the line like a chaos engine. Fede Valverde, the captain, coming off a monstrous season for Real Madrid. Giorgian de Arrascaeta, who scored 18 goals from midfield for Flamengo last year, floating between the lines like a South American De Bruyne. At the back? Giménez and Araújo — two absolute monsters.

Saudi Arabia shocked Argentina in 2022, but then lost to Poland and Mexico and finished bottom. They’ve only ever escaped the group once (1994), and a coaching change in April is about as bad as preparation gets. They’ll target Cape Verde for their points. They won’t get them here.

Tip: Uruguay to win to nil @ 2.19. 1 unit.

Iran v New Zealand

World Cup Group G, Los Angeles Stadium, Los Angeles, USA, 3am CET, Tuesday 16th June
Prices: 1.93 Iran, 3.35 Draw, 4.30 New Zealand

New Zealand are physical, experienced, and built around Chris Wood, who remains their one true elite‑level threat. But their 4–0 loss to Haiti in preparation is a red flag the size of a billboard.

Iran, meanwhile, are World Cup regulars. They know how to navigate these games. They know how to manage pressure. And they still have Mehdi Taremi, who has scored 60 international goals — a ridiculous return at any level.

Iran need to win this. New Zealand need a miracle.

Tip: Iran to win @ 1.93. 1 unit.
